House of the Dragon Episode 22: Tumbleton

Daemon travels to the Vale and finds his daughter Rhaena living in hiding with Sheepstealer, then learns that the dragon’s rampage helped cause the death of Jace, leaving him forced to choose between protecting Rhaena and avenging Rhaenyra’s son. He returns to King’s Landing with the charred head of a shepherd, falsely claiming he has killed Sheepstealer’s rider, and Rhaenyra reacts with anger and frustration that she was denied justice herself.

Rhaenyra also deals with the strain of ruling: Mysaria presses her about the worsening finances and suggests naming a master of coin, so Rhaenyra appoints Serrihenanderly to the post mainly so someone can take the blame when money runs short. Corlys, angry that Rhaenyra still will not legitimize his bastards, leaves the city.

At King’s Landing, tensions rise around the city’s new reality under Rhaenyra’s rule, including hostile graffiti calling her the “Queen of Bastards,” while she also tries to manage her supporters and keep her dragonriders under control. Rhaenyra later speaks with Alicent, who explains that she sent Daeron away as a child to keep him from becoming like his brothers, though Alicent knows little else of his upbringing.

In the Tumbleton storyline, Ormund Hightower’s forces move into the town after the garrison is burned, and the occupation quickly turns abusive as soldiers invade homes and one man attempts to assault Hugh Hammer’s wife. Hugh’s family is pulled into the disorder, and the violence in the town escalates as Ormund uses the situation to demonstrate power and discipline among his men.

Elsewhere, Criston Cole and Gwayne Hightower learn that King’s Landing has fallen and that Aemond is missing, while Aegon and Larys find what appears to be the corpse of Sunfyre in the woods; Aegon refuses to accept that the dragon is dead. Criston rejects Gwayne’s plan to march directly to Tumbleton, choosing instead to keep waging war in the riverlands.

The episode ends with the political and military situation still shifting: Rhaenyra’s hold on King’s Landing is insecure, Daemon’s lie about Sheepstealer leaves his family situation unresolved, and the struggle over Tumbleton becomes more dangerous as the town comes under harsher control.
