House of the Dragon Episode 6: The Princess and the Queen

Ten years have passed since Rhaenyra Targaryen's wedding to Laenor Velaryon. At the Red Keep, Rhaenyra gives birth to her third son amid the pain of labor. A handmaid delivers Queen Alicent's command to bring the newborn to her immediately, but Rhaenyra refuses to appear weak: she rises, expels her afterbirth, dresses herself, and carries the baby to Alicent's chambers herself, where the queen inspects the dark-haired infant before reluctantly handing him back.

Rhaenyra names her son Joffrey and presents him proudly at court, to the delight of most except Alicent. Tensions simmer as Alicent openly questions the parentage of Rhaenyra's sons—Jacaerys (Jace), Lucerys (Luke), and the newborn—all visibly dark-haired like Ser Harwin Strong, Rhaenyra's sworn shield, unlike their supposed father Laenor.

At a Small Council meeting, Rhaenyra clashes with Alicent over policy, including the crabfeeder threat in the Stepstones. In a bid for peace, Rhaenyra apologizes for their strife and proposes betrothing her son Jace to Alicent's daughter Helaena, offering a dragon egg for Alicent's son Aemond as well. Alicent rejects the offer outright.

Meanwhile, in Pentos, Daemon and his wife Laena Velaryon live with their young daughters Baela and Rhaena and their dragons. Prince Reggio hosts them lavishly and offers permanent residence in exchange for their dragons' protection against the Triarchy. Daemon teaches Baela High Valyrian; Laena later urges him to decline, longing to return to Driftmark for their daughters' sake and a true dragonrider life. Daemon acknowledges the transactional nature of their stay but prefers it to Westerosi politics.

Back at court, Ser Harwin Strong argues fiercely with Ser Criston Cole after Criston mocks Harwin's claim of paternity over Rhaenyra's sons. Their brawl spills into King Viserys's chambers, where Harwin accidentally knocks over Viserys's model of Old Valyria. Viserys banishes Harwin from court. That night, Lyonel Strong, Hand of the King and Harwin's father, confronts Harwin about the scandal and resigns his position, citing a growing shadow over House Strong. Lyonel departs for Harrenhal to set his affairs in order.

The next day, Jace claims the dragon Vermax in a ceremony at Dragonstone, successfully commanding it to halt and burn a goat for its first meal, while his brothers and Alicent's children—including bored Aegon and ambitious Aemond—watch. Alicent complains to Viserys about Rhaenyra's sons claiming dragons ahead of Aemond.

Rhaenyra finds Laenor sparring with Qarl Correy in the yard and agrees with his earlier advice to leave court amid rising tensions. She plans to relocate her sons and household to Dragonstone, away from gossip and Alicent's influence, inviting Laenor and Qarl to join for their swords in the brewing conflict.

Larys Strong, Lyonel's clubfooted son, visits Alicent in her chambers, gossiping about Rhaenyra's labors and hinting at her infidelity. He reveals his spies among the bedmaids and offers continued loyalty.

At Harrenhal, Larys arranges the murder of his father Lyonel and brother Harwin by setting a fire, claiming it as an accident to secure his own rise. Alicent reacts with horror upon hearing the news.

In Pentos, Laena's labor proves fatal; the maesters say the breech baby cannot be saved without killing her. In agony, she commands her dragon Vhagar to dracarys her. Daemon steps outside moments before, returning to witness Vhagar engulf her in flames.
