House of the Dragon Episode 5: We Light the Way

The episode opens in the Vale, where Lady Rhea Royce goes hunting alone near Runestone, rejecting her cousin Ser Gerold Royce's company. On her return, her estranged husband, Prince Daemon Targaryen, confronts her; her horse rears up in fright, crushing and paralyzing her. After she insults him, Daemon finishes her off with a rock, staging the death as a hunting accident.

King Viserys I Targaryen and Princess Rhaenyra sail to Driftmark, where Viserys suffers from violent seasickness and painful lesions. There, they meet Lord Corlys Velaryon and Princess Rhaenys to propose Rhaenyra's marriage to their son, Ser Laenor Velaryon, to unite the Targaryen and Velaryon houses and secure Velaryon support for Rhaenyra's claim. Knowing Laenor's homosexuality, Rhaenyra privately suggests they fulfill royal duties while taking lovers on the side.

Ser Criston Cole begs Rhaenyra to elope with him to Essos under new identities, seeing it as escape from his broken Kingsguard vows. She refuses, prioritizing her throne, and offers him a continued secret role as her lover, which he rejects in despair, calling himself her "whore."

At the wedding feast in Driftmark's hall, the Velaryon family arrives in extravagant gold attire. Daemon unexpectedly enters despite his exile. Queen Alicent Hightower interrupts Viserys's toast, wearing a green gown signaling House Hightower's call to arms; her uncle, Lord Hobert Hightower, pledges full support. Ser Gerold Royce confronts Daemon over Rhea's death. Daemon flirts and dances with Lady Laena Velaryon, then with Rhaenyra, mocking her upcoming marriage and hinting at his own ambitions; she rebuffs him sharply.

Chaos erupts when a severed animal head is presented as a toast "gift," horrifying guests. Laenor discovers his male lover's corpse in a side room and breaks down in grief. Ser Criston heads to the godswood intending suicide but is stopped by Alicent. The festivities end abruptly; the lords depart, and Rhaenyra and Laenor wed immediately in Driftmark's throne room under the High Septon. Viserys faints as the episode closes.
