Full recap
Lippo observes the examinees. Leorio demands the next round begin, stating the previous match should be over due to Majtani's condition. The next convict, a woman, steps forward and explains that the match hasn't ended because Majtani is still alive, and it was a deathmatch. Leorio, Kurapika, and Killua discuss what to do. Killua offers to kill Majtani for Kurapika. Leorio suggests a majority vote on whether to kill Majtani. He tries to sway Killua and Gon, but Gon suggests waiting. Tonpa remarks that majority decisions suppress the minority, which can lead to a team falling apart. The convicts on the other side notice a shift in atmosphere.
Meanwhile, Hisoka enters a room where a man named Togari, a former examiner, waits for him. Togari seeks revenge for Hisoka scarring his face in the previous year's exam. Hisoka dismisses Togari as an incompetent examiner, blaming Togari's own inadequacies for his scars. Togari demonstrates his "Infinite Quad-Wielding" curved knife skills, partially showing them before attacking Hisoka. Hisoka easily dodges the knives, sustaining only a slight wound. Togari claims Hisoka has nowhere to run and will be cut until he dies. Hisoka quickly discerns Togari's attack pattern and gracefully catches two of the blades before they hit him. He admits it would be impossible to stop Togari's attack without grabbing the blades. Togari had spent half a year learning to catch and throw those blades. Hisoka states that catching the blades was easier than he expected and appreciates Togari's efforts. Hisoka then decapitates Togari with his own blades. Hisoka becomes the first to pass the third phase of the Hunter Exam, taking six hours and seventeen minutes.
Back with Leorio and the others, Leorio impatiently waits for Majtani to get up. Gon points something out about Majtani to Killua. They then tell Leorio that Majtani might be dead as they run towards the ring. Leorio calls out to the convicts, stating they want to check Majtani's body to confirm he isn't dead. The female convict says he is just unconscious, but Leorio doesn't believe her. She suggests a bet on whether Majtani is alive, using their remaining time as the stake. She explains they can bet a minimum of 10 hours out of a possible 50, and a side loses when they have no hours left. If Leorio's team loses 50 hours, their time limit is shortened by 50 hours. If the convicts lose, their sentences are increased by 50 years. If they accept, she will check Majtani's body.
In his monitoring room, Lippo observes this exchange. He identifies the female prisoner as Leroute, serving a 112-year sentence for endangered species trafficking and illegal gambling, and comments that the match sounds like her kind of game. Kurapika advises Leorio to consider the bet carefully, as losing 50 hours would be detrimental. Leorio becomes angry, blaming Kurapika for not finishing off Majtani. Gon tells them not to fight, while Tonpa enjoys the argument. Leorio accepts Leroute's challenge. Leroute states the first bet is whether Majtani is alive, and Leorio can choose the number of hours to bet. Leorio bets 10 hours that Majtani is still alive. Leroute agrees, and they proceed to check. Kurapika remarks that Leorio was cautious. Leorio explains it was the obvious choice, as even if he was wrong, Kurapika would still have won his match. He flips Majtani over and feels his heartbeat, confirming he is alive. Leorio wins the bet, gaining them 10 extra hours.
Killua realizes the situation is problematic because Majtani might not wake up, which would benefit the convicts as they could subtract 72 years from their sentences. Leroute tells Leorio it's his turn to choose what to bet on. He bets on whether Majtani is truly unconscious. Majtani, in his thoughts, confirms he is faking and wonders what Leorio will do. He recalls receiving a note telling him to fake unconsciousness and hide it in his mouth, but this situation wasn't covered. He understood the plan but is now worried.
Leroute bets 20 hours that Majtani is unconscious. Majtani realizes he must continue pretending. Leroute asks Leorio how they will confirm if Majtani is faking. Leorio drags Majtani's body to the edge of the ring, intending to toss him over. This startles Majtani. Leorio reasons that if Majtani is truly unconscious, he will fall to his death. Leroute objects, stating the previous match isn't settled and they can't accept those terms. Leorio assures her that if Majtani falls, they will forfeit the previous match, giving the convicts two wins. She agrees to these terms, which further unnerves Majtani. Leroute then asks to change her wager from 20 hours to 40 hours, betting that Majtani is not unconscious. Leorio accepts, saying she has finally shown her true colors, and he will let go of Majtani now. As he begins to fall, Majtani finally stops his act and wakes up. Leorio grabs him before he can fall and pulls him back into the ring. Majtani exclaims that they are crazy, he will take the loss, and he is safer in prison.
Leroute asks when Leorio knew Majtani was alive. Leorio replies that he knew from studying to become a doctor, as Majtani's eye movements gave him away. She states that her side now gains 40 hours, bringing their total to 80, while Leorio's side loses 40, bringing their total to 20. Leorio replies that they now have a 2-1 lead and tells her it is her turn again to choose what to bet on.
