Hunter x Hunter Episode 103: Check x and x Mate
Despite having mastered the rules of the board game "Gungi", the king is upset for still being unable to defeat the champion before him. Meanwhile, Morel is approached by Cheetu who uses his new abilities to trap him inside a closed space, claiming that he can't leave unless he manages to catch him in 8 hours.
Full recap
Komugi enters a room and introduces herself to the King. The King, Meruem, is reading a Gungi rulebook and orders her to be silent as she is distracting him. After some time, Meruem prepares to play and notices Komugi lying on her side. Shaiapouf explains that Komugi cannot breathe because her nose is clogged, as she obeyed the King's order to shut up. Komugi recovers and apologizes for her behavior. As they begin the game, Meruem is surprised to see Komugi open her eyes. When asked if she can see, Komugi replies she cannot but always opens her eyes when playing. Meruem observes a change in her demeanor. She makes the first move.
Elsewhere, Gon tries to contact Killua and concludes his phone is off. Knuckle complains about waiting for Killua's call. Meleoron observes Knuckle and Shoot from hiding, noting Knuckle's eagerness for a fight and Shoot's distrustful nature. He decides he cannot trust Gon's friends until he receives good news. A group of stray dogs appears. Gon notices they still have collars. Shoot tells Gon that Knuckle has been feeding these dogs and sacrificing sleep to help them. Knuckle denies this but mentions some dogs are too loyal to leave their homes, and some refused the food. Knuckle begins to cry, again denying it. Shoot tells him not to cry. Meleoron thinks Knuckle is a different person but still doesn't trust him.
Back in the palace, Komugi makes a move with 7-8-2, spy, and announces checkmate. Meruem analyzes her strategy, concluding it's a standard beginner's move and that she isn't showing her true skill. He asks for another game, which Komugi accepts. The game continues into the night. Komugi attacks Meruem with 8-8-1 knight. Meruem gives up, announcing checkmate. Komugi compliments Meruem on being a fast learner. Meruem offers her rest, but Komugi declines, stating she can play Gungi for three days and nights without sleep. Meruem tells her he has another guest, and Komugi leaves. Once she is gone, Shaiapouf approaches the King, who states all the games are identical. Meruem believes that in four or five more games, he will force Komugi to use her real ability and disrupt her rhythm. Menthuthuyoupi arrives, holding a note, and reports that the previous Go champion has hanged himself. Meruem laughs and smiles, telling Menthuthuyoupi to bring Komugi back. Their game resumes.
In the capital of Peijin, Morel uses his abilities to create an army of 50 soldiers from his power, Deep Purple, to delay Neferpitou and the selection. While scouting, Neferpitou's Nen manipulates one of Morel's soldiers, which Morel immediately disables. On a roof, Morel encounters Cheetu, who appears more confident and strong. Morel deduces that the Chimera Ants have an Exorcist, as Knuckle's A.P.R. is gone, or Cheetu himself can dispel Nen. In the shadows, Leol watches, confident that whoever wins will still be defeated by him. Cheetu engages Morel, punching him. Morel is surprised Cheetu still relies on speed. The area around them trembles, and Morel is teleported to a savannah. Cheetu mocks Morel and demonstrates his new "tag" ability, explaining that Morel must touch him within eight hours. Cheetu rolls an hourglass, starting the timer. Morel walks away, continuing to deduce Cheetu's ability.
In Peijin, Knov witnesses Morel and Cheetu suddenly disappear. He runs, unaware that Flutter's dragonflies are pursuing him. Morel walks to the edge of the savannah and feels a wall. He deduces the field is about the size of a baseball field. He considers stopping Deep Purple to escape, but it's too risky, and his aura might not return. He walks back to Cheetu, who seems enthusiastic. Morel tries to break the hourglass but fails. He asks Cheetu what happens if he doesn't catch him within eight hours. Cheetu refuses to answer. Morel puts down his pipe and lies on the ground, confusing Cheetu. Morel tells Cheetu to wake him in five hours, which angers Cheetu. He becomes more frustrated when Morel fakes a snore. The Hunter smiles to himself, realizing the battle is one of mental fortitude, not speed.
Knov runs into an alley, still chased by a dragonfly. Flutter notifies Leol of Knov's presence. Leol asks if Knov is with anyone, and Flutter says no. Leol worries about Deep Purple, thinking they are ordinary soldiers but that their leader might be hidden. He cannot show his power yet, and Hina is still busy exorcising Nen from Cheetu. Convinced he still needs pawns, Leol contacts Neferpitou at the palace. The Royal Guard accepts, but states the enemies must be defeated soon as the King is almost done with his games and might insist on defeating them himself. Bloster and Welfin are sent to assist Leol.
After the call, Neferpitou enters the room where Meruem and Komugi are still playing. Shaiapouf worries that Meruem is nowhere near victory. Meruem analyzes the situation again, remarking he should have broken Komugi's defenses. He attacks with 4-5-1, musketeer, which Komugi immediately counters with 2-8-2, fortress. Meruem is alarmed that Komugi's spy, which had been inactive, can suddenly control the board. He announces his defeat and demands another rematch. Komugi's strength in the game upsets the King.
