Hunter x Hunter Episode 13: Letter x from x Gon

On Whale Island, a woman named Mito receives a letter in her mailbox. She reads the letter from Gon at the dining room table with an older woman. Gon writes that he is doing well and has passed the third phase of the Hunter Exam, which he describes as difficult. He recalls leaving the island on a boat that sailed into a storm.

Gon's letter then prompts a series of flashbacks. He remembers meeting Kurapika and Leorio, joining them to save a man named Katzo, and becoming friends. He also recalls a confrontation with a Quizzing Lady and meeting the Kiriko Family. The letter continues, bringing to mind Satotz introducing himself in an underground tunnel at the start of the first phase of the Hunter Exam. Gon remembers running through the tunnel, meeting Killua for the first time, and racing him to the exit. He also recalls a ball-catching match with the Hunter organization's Chairman, Netero, who beat them both but commended their effort. Mito is relieved to read that Gon is having fun and has found a best friend in Killua.

More flashbacks appear, showing Gon and others running through the Milsy Wetlands, a man named Hisoka testing participants, and a confrontation involving Hisoka, Leorio, and Gon. The letter then describes a blimp sailing through the sky towards Trick Tower, noting that only 41 of the original 404 contestants remained. Gon remembers descending the Tower and confronting prisoners. During that time, Gon and his group decided to break through a wall to pass the third phase, which amused Hisoka and 19 other participants.

Gon tells Mito and the older woman that he doesn't know how many phases remain, but he plans to pass them all and become a Hunter, just like his dad. He signs off, "Until next time, Gon Freecss." Mito walks to a picture of Gon's dad. The older woman in the background says his name is Ging and that Gon is following in his footsteps. Mito then looks at the picture of Ging with a tear in her eye and asks if he is happy about this.
