Hunter x Hunter Episode 29: Awakening x and x Potential
After reaching the 200th floor, Gon and Killua run into Hisoka's barrier of Nen. They ask Wing to use the violent method for activating their Nen potential. As the deadline for registration draws near, they begin training in one of the four major principles of Nen, Ten.
Full recap
Wing's lesson continues into the night, with a focus on learning Nen before midnight. Wing explains that Nen is a power within everyone, but only a few can use it. He describes two ways to awaken it: deliberately, which a character named Zushi used, or aggressively. Zushi mastered a technique called Ten in six months.
A character named Killua reminds Wing about the deadline to learn Ten and pass through another character's barrier. Wing decides they must use the aggressive method. He explains that the key is to contain aura within their bodies. Wing then demonstrates a technique called Hatsu, which he used to destroy a wall, by directing his aura towards them. He assures them he will restrain himself to avoid harming them, but warns that forcing open aura nodes is dangerous and usually takes months. He notes that even Zushi took three months, but believes Gon and Killua could do it in a week. Killua points out that a quick method is better, but Wing stresses the danger of this specific method, as it could be lethal if performed by a weak or malicious person.
Gon observes that Wing is neither weak nor malicious. Killua asks why Wing is now teaching them the real four major principles of Nen. Wing replies that he didn't want them to be at a disadvantage on the 200th floor of Heavens Arena, where all fighters use Nen. He reveals that veteran fighters on that floor aggressively awaken new fighters' Nen, often causing injury or death, but he is confident Gon and Killua have the potential to survive this method. He instructs them to remove their overshirts and turn their backs. As Wing places his hands near their backs, Gon and Killua feel heat and pressure. Killua is reminded of a character's Nen, though much weaker. Wing then sends his aura through their bodies, opening all their aura nodes.
A strange substance, which Wing identifies as their aura or life energy, flows from them. Gon compares it to smoke, and Killua worries about losing too much. Wing explains that losing too much aura causes fatigue and eventual collapse. He then tells them to concentrate on containing the aura within their bodies, instructing them to close their eyes, visualize the aura flowing like blood, and picture it hovering around them. Both Gon and Killua immediately master this technique, surprising Zushi and impressing Wing, who notes their natural ability to find the most effective stance.
Wing tells them to open their eyes. Gon describes feeling surrounded by warm mucus, and Killua feels like he's wearing weightless clothes. Wing tells them to remember this feeling, as they will eventually be able to use Ten even while sleeping. He then prepares to use hostile Nen against them, explaining that they wouldn't have been able to withstand it before. Killua understands an earlier analogy. Wing assures them that if they can withstand this attack, they will be able to pass through the barrier. He then sends out his aura, and Gon and Killua are heard yelling.
Back on the 200th floor, Gon and Killua approach a character named Hisoka. Hisoka sends out his Nen, but Gon and Killua, now using Ten, confidently walk through his barrier. Hisoka dispels his Nen and welcomes them, guessing Gon came to Heavens Arena to train before challenging him. Gon replies that he didn't expect to find Hisoka there, which saves him time. Hisoka chuckles and warns Gon not to be overconfident about using Ten, revealing there's much more to learn about Nen. He demonstrates this by holding up two fingers and creating various shapes with his aura. Hisoka states he has no desire to fight Gon currently but will agree to a match if Gon wins at least one fight in the 200s.
After Hisoka leaves, three other fighters observe Gon and Killua using Nen. A female clerk welcomes them to the 200s and asks them to fill out forms and register for a match. She explains they have 90 days to fight, or they will be disqualified. She also states they need ten wins to clear the floor and will be disqualified if they lose four matches before that. She excitedly reveals that ten wins grant them the chance to fight Floor Masters, the 21 strongest fighters who control floors 230-250. Defeating a Floor Master makes them the new master and allows participation in the Battle Olympia tournament.
Gon and Killua are unimpressed. Killua asks if the top floor has anything special. The clerk angrily explains the Battle Olympia winner gets a penthouse. Gon points out Killua's house is 3,700 meters above ground. Before the clerk can mention prize money, Killua says he doesn't care about the top floor, and Gon adds he only wants to fight Hisoka. The clerk begins to cry. Killua reminds Gon he needs one win and asks if he plans to wait. Gon clenches his fist, stating he plans to fight immediately to understand the opponents.
As Gon fills out a form, the three fighters approach, stating they are waiting to register. Killua realizes they want to fight Gon on the same day. Gon tells the clerk he's ready to fight any day. The three fighters chuckle confidently. The clerk gives Gon and Killua their room numbers and promises to notify them of their fight day. As they leave, Killua glances back at the three fighters, guessing they endured the initiation Wing mentioned and realizing they could have ended up similarly if they hadn't learned Nen. Gon, however, is focused on his nice room, and they both enjoy the city view.
A message on the television announces Gon's fight for 3 p.m. on March 11, which Killua realizes is the next day. Gon calmly practices Ten, saying he likely won't win but needs to experience a Nen battle and test his new power. On the day of the match, an announcer introduces Gon, then his opponent, Gido, who has a 4-1 record. A flashback shows Wing telling Gon and Killua that Ten is only for defense and that they haven't worked on offense. He warns that skilled Nen users can break through Ten and inflict lethal strikes, advising them to wait at least two months before fighting and offering to teach them more.
Back in the present, Gon apologizes to Wing, smiling and admitting his eagerness to fight. Zushi watches with a smile, while Wing appears exasperated. The referee starts the match. Gon immediately uses Ten. Gido chuckles and reveals several spinning tops on his walking stick, which the announcer calls Dancing Tops. Gido uses his "Battle Waltz" ability, sending the tops flying at Gon. The tops spin around him, bouncing off each other, and one strikes Gon in the back. Gon recovers, and Gido scores a point. Gido explains he uses Nen to make the tops spin for hours, and their attack patterns are unpredictable even to him. Gon dodges multiple tops, worried by their hammer-like impact, and nervously awaits another strike.
