Hunter x Hunter Episode 38: Reply x from x Dad
Gon and Killua have begun to listen to the cassette tape left behind by Ging in anticipation of Gon becoming a Hunter. What remains in this foretelling message from Gon's long-absent father?
Full recap
While playing a cassette tape, Gon hears his father's voice for the first time. His father congratulates Gon on becoming a Hunter and asks if he wants to see him, offering two choices. If Gon wants to see him, he should continue listening; if not, he should press the stop button. Gon continues to listen. His father then says if Gon is only slightly interested in seeing him, he should stop listening, giving Gon a minute to decide.
Gon listens until his father's voice states that Gon must want to see him, but he doesn't want to see Gon, calling himself a bad person for prioritizing his own desires over being a parent. His father estimates it has been at least ten years since he recorded the tape and that he is still the same selfish person. As Gon and Killua listen, Gon's father is shown riding on top of two unknown creatures. He continues speaking, telling Gon that he is doing reckless things and that if Gon wants to find him, he will make it as difficult as possible.
After hearing these words, Gon is very eager. Killua is about to turn off the cassette, but Gon stops him, saying there is still more. Gon's father then asks if Gon wants to hear his mother's voice, but Gon quickly stops the cassette and tells Killua that his mom is Mito. After they finish listening, an aura appears around the tape player. An ability was used on the cassette tape, causing it to rewind and then record. Even though Gon pulls out the switch of the cassette and Killua tries to break it, the cassette continues to move and erases Gon's father's voice.
Killua explains that Gon's father used an ability to erase his voice to make it harder for Gon to find him. The two then look at the memory card again. Killua decides to buy a game console from an online website called ToyLand so they can use the memory card. After Killua buys the console, they insert the memory card and discover a game called Greed Island is saved on it. They learn the game is incredibly expensive, costing more than 5 billion Jenny, and is very rare, with no help found online to track it down. Killua calls his brother to learn more about the game, and his brother has two leads. Killua promises to trade a copied version of the memory card to his brother for the information. He tells Gon a rumor that a dozen copies of the game will be distributed at the Southernpiece Auction. Gon and Killua bid farewell to Mito and her grandmother, and the two head toward their next destination, Yorknew City.
