Hunter x Hunter Episode 5: Hisoka x Is x Sneaky
While following Satotz, a fog moves into the swamp and most of the participants are either rendered unconscious or killed by traps and verocious beasts. A group of candidates target Hisoka as they feel he's a threat. Gon and Killua are separated from Leorio and Kurapika and both sides are eventually attacked by monsters. Leorio and Kurapika encounter Hisoka about to be attacked by candidates but are shocked to watch the magician easily take the candidates down. Hisoka then targets Leorio and Kurapika, but realizing that they are no match for him, they decide to head in different directions to stop him from following. However, Leorio returns, unable to run away from a fight. As expected, Leorio is beaten badly by Hisoka. Before the melee can get any worse, Gon, who is separated from Killua, arrives to stop Hisoka. Although he is also no match for Hisoka, he manages to hit his face once before being strangled by Hisoka.

Gon and Killua run ahead through the foggy Milsy Wetlands during the first phase of the Hunter Exam, following examiner Satotz closely while trying to distance themselves from the dangerous applicant Hisoka, whose bloodlust Killua senses. Gon literally sniffs the air but detects no smell from Hisoka, and they yell back to urge Kurapika and Leorio to catch up, though Killua scolds Gon for it.
Kurapika and Leorio, having lost sight of the front-runners amid the thick fog and deceptive creatures of the wetlands that prey on candidates, stumble upon a group of applicants surrounding Hisoka and demanding he drop out of the exam for being too dangerous, even willing to disqualify themselves to enforce it. Hisoka smirks and counters by playing "examiner" to test their worthiness; he effortlessly slaughters most of them with his razor-sharp cards before stabbing the last fleeing one.
Spotting Kurapika and Leorio watching from afar, Hisoka approaches with interest, prompting Kurapika to whisper a plan for them to flee in opposite directions since Hisoka's combat experience makes fighting pointless. They split up and run, but Leorio soon doubles back alone, refusing to flee a fight, and charges at Hisoka with a stick.
As Hisoka prepares to finish Leorio, Gon intervenes by whipping Hisoka across the face with his fishing rod, distracting him and allowing Leorio to escape momentarily. Hisoka turns his attention to Gon, engaging him in a tense, playful skirmish while Leorio keeps attacking futilely and gets knocked out cold; Hisoka crouches close to the coughing Gon, declares that both he and Leorio "pass" his test, urges Gon to grow into a fine Hunter, and carries the unconscious Leorio toward the phase's end.
Kurapika reunites with Gon, who followed Leorio's cologne scent to reach the site; they discuss Hisoka's actions, with Kurapika speculating he spared them due to their potential as future challenges. Only 148 applicants remain as the first phase concludes.
