Hunter x Hunter Episode 8: Decision x by x Majority?

Season 1· aired 2011-11-20· canon

The airship reaches Trick Tower, the Phase Three site, which is a tall featureless pillar built on an equally high platform. The candidates are told that to pass Phase 3, they have to climb down from the top to the base of the tower. An experienced rock climber candidate tries to climb down but is eaten by some flying monsters. Later, Kurapika finds that more than half of the candidates have discovered hidden doors to go inside the tower, which Gon finds one as well. However, the catch is that there are many hidden doors, each one can be only used once and only one person can fit through a door, which means they have to split up. When they try out different doors, they realize that they end up in the same room. In the room, Gon's group are given instructions and special wristwatches for five of them to follow the majority, but they cannot proceed without a fifth member. Lippo, one of the Phase 3 examiners tells them this while explaining they have chosen the path of majority rule.

Full recap

An airship lands on Trick Tower, a prison for long-term criminals. A man named Beans announces that the goal of the third phase of the exam is to reach the bottom of the tower within 72 hours. A boy named Gon looks down the side of the tower, but a boy named Kurapika states that climbing down would be suicidal. An examinee who is a rock climber attempts to descend the tower but is immediately eaten by Six-legged Flying Beasts.

After some time, Gon and his companions notice that the number of examinees is decreasing. Gon discovers that the way to enter the tower is to flip one of many large stone tiles. They each choose a tile and enter the tower, all ending up in the same room. Inside, they see five watches, each with an X and an O button. The prison warden, Lippo, explains that they need a fifth person to proceed because their chosen route is "majority rules," meaning they must vote on two choices, and the option with the most votes wins. Lippo is also seen instructing prisoners to get into position for the test.

Two hours later, the final person joins their group: a man named Tonpa. A door appears, and they must vote whether to open it. Everyone except Tonpa votes to open it. They pass through the door into another room with a door on the left and a door on the right. They are then given a choice between the two doors. Gon and a man named Leorio choose the right door, while the others choose the left. Since most votes were for the left door, it opens. Kurapika explains that most people would choose to go right, so going left might be a better idea.

The group advances into a large room with a platform in the middle. On the other side are five prisoners. Gon and his companions must defeat at least three of these prisoners in a challenge to advance. Lippo clarifies that there can be no draws and that the prisoners will have a year deducted from their sentences for every hour they delay the examinees. The first prisoner, Bendot, sentenced for 199 years for robbery and murder, is introduced. Tonpa volunteers to go first. The challenge is a fight. Tonpa immediately gives up, then informs the team that he does not want to become a Hunter but only wants to cause trouble for others. Leorio becomes very upset.

The next prisoner is Sedokan, sentenced for 149 years for serial bombings. Gon volunteers to face him. It is revealed that out of the 40 applicants who began the third phase of the Hunter exam, only 39 remain.
