Lioness Episode 20: Murder Hornets

Joe is alive at the start of the episode, but she is being held by a Russian team that has been moving her between locations while torturing her with water and psychological pressure. Her captors strip away her tracking device, keep her isolated, and prepare to move her out of the United States before the CIA can reach her.

The CIA and the Lioness team scramble to locate her, racing to a Baltimore hangar after tracing where she was last held. They arrive too late: the Russians have already transferred Joe onto a private plane and escaped, leaving the team with only partial clues and a shrinking window to recover her.

Joe is not passive during the ordeal. She deliberately injures herself to leave behind a blood trail, giving her team evidence that she was there and helping confirm the Russians’ route of escape. That trace becomes important for the search effort after the failed rescue.

At the hangar, the team’s rescue attempt turns violent. Kyle kills an immobilized Russian intelligence officer while trying to force out information about the aircraft, which creates tension inside the unit because the killing appears to violate their rules of engagement. Kaitlyn and the others are forced to weigh that breach against the urgency of finding Joe.

As the search widens, the team tries to identify where the aircraft is headed, but the plane’s locator has been disabled. The episode presents the escape as a race against time, with the Russians now beyond immediate U.S. reach and Joe’s fate uncertain.

In the episode’s flashback material, Joe’s earlier covert work is shown to be part of a larger operation aimed at exposing Russian intelligence activity through a Ukrainian double agent. That earlier mission provides context for why the Russians are targeting her, but the episode keeps the focus on the immediate crisis of her kidnapping and removal.

The episode ends away from the field with Kaitlyn speaking to Neal, Joe’s husband, and preparing him for several possible outcomes. She lays out that Joe could come back quickly, return only after a longer diplomatic or intelligence trade, or not return at all, leaving Neal facing the possibility that she may never come home.
