My Hero Academia Episode 39: Game Start

Season 3· mixed

Before the U.A. students head to their training camp, Class 1-A goes to the pool for extra training, and the League of Villains plots their next move.

Full recap

At the League of Villains hideout, Tomura and Kurogiri watch a summer broadcast featuring All Might. Kurogiri turns it off, and Tomura states he understands why Izuku Midoriya and the Hero Killer irritate him. He believes All Might gives people hope through his heroic deeds and smile. Tomura then leaves, planning to create a world without All Might and expose society's fragile sense of justice.

After the semester ends, Izuku continues training in his apartment, still adjusting to having All Might's power. Denki Kaminari and Minoru Mineta arrive, asking him to train at the pool before the upcoming training camp. At U.A. High School, Shota and Vlad King review their students' Quirks from Class 1-A and Class 1-B. Izuku, Denki, and Minoru approach Shota, who confirms they can use the pool.

Denki and Minoru reveal they overheard the girls discussing using the school pool since Class 1-A cannot go on vacation. They only invited Izuku to gain permission to see the girls in bikinis. However, Izuku invited all the boys from Class 1-A for endurance training. The girls are present, but they are wearing school-issued swimsuits, disappointing Denki while somewhat satisfying Minoru.

While the girls play volleyball, the boys take a break from intense endurance training led by Tenya Ida. Izuku and Tenya reflect on how they became friends. Eijiro Kirishima and Katsuki Bakugo then arrive, and Katsuki challenges Izuku to a fight. Izuku declines, so Tenya proposes a 50-meter swimming competition. The boys race in groups, with most using their Quirks to cross the pool. Izuku swims and uses his Quirk to win, even against Tenya's Recipro Burst technique. After their race, they both notice Shoto Todoroki, and the three of them reaffirm their commitment to becoming heroes.

All Might meets with Detective Tsukauchi to discuss recent activities involving the League of Villains. Meanwhile, the final race between Izuku, Katsuki, and Shoto is about to begin. As they start, Shota arrives and dismisses all the students from the pool area, stating their time is up. Katsuki and Eijiro walk home, with Katsuki expressing anger that Shota stopped the race, vowing never to let Izuku and Shoto beat him. Izuku returns to Takoba Municipal Beach Park, where he meets All Might. All Might reminds him to train diligently at the forest lodge, as Izuku may one day need to take his place as the Symbol of Peace.

Later that night, Shota and Vlad King discuss that the training camp's location has been changed to protect the students. Tomura makes a phone call, stating that a "new game" will be starting soon.
