My Hero Academia Episode 4: Start Line

Season 1· aired 2016-04-24· canon

At the entrance exam, Izuku falls behind as the other students defeat faux villains left and right. Will he be able to get enough points to pass?

Full recap

Just before the practical test of the U.A. Entrance Exam begins, participants stand in awe of the massive training field. Izuku notices the girl who saved him from falling earlier—Ochaco Uraraka—and wants to thank her, but fellow participant Tenya Ida, who scolded him for muttering in the auditorium, warns him not to distract her while others dismiss Izuku's chances of passing.

The exam starts abruptly, and everyone rushes into the test area, leaving Izuku behind. He hurries after them but freezes when a one-point robot attacks; a participant named Yuga Aoyama destroys it with a laser from his navel before moving on.

Izuku scrambles for robots to destroy but finds most already taken out by others, including Ochaco, who has racked up 28 points by picking up and dropping villains. Meanwhile, U.A. judges like Present Mic, Midnight, and Snipe monitor the examinees, evaluating speed, strength, and composure.

As time runs low and Izuku despairs at zero points, a giant zero-point robot appears, causing everyone—including Tenya—to flee in panic. It smashes buildings, trapping Ochaco under debris and threatening to crush her.

Seeing her in danger spurs Izuku into action; filled with adrenaline, he activates his newfound power—One For All—for the first time, leaping high and smashing the robot's head with a powerful punch, destroying it as others watch in awe and judges praise his self-sacrifice.

Izuku then plummets, his legs and right arm shattered from the power's recoil. Ochaco saves him again by using her gravity quirk to make him weightless for a safe landing after slapping him mid-fall.

The exam ends, and U.A.'s nurse, Recovery Girl—an old woman—treats Izuku by kissing his forehead, healing him but leaving him fatigued as she notes his body isn't used to the power.

A week later, Izuku frets over his zero practical score and can't reach All Might, while his mother consoles him for trying despite not knowing about All Might.
