Prison Break Episode 19: The Key

Season 1· aired 2006-04-24

Michael must get the key to the infirmary and enlist the help of an old face, while Lincoln learns the identity of his kidnapper and another inmate learns of the escape.

Full recap

Lincoln’s transport is rammed by a truck, and while he is down, Kellerman tries to suffocate him. A man who has been following the situation intervenes, knocks Kellerman out with a fire extinguisher, and gets Lincoln out of immediate danger.

Back at Fox River, Sucre is released from solitary confinement, and Michael tells the others that he has finished the map for the escape route but still needs the infirmary key to make the plan work. Michael realizes that Sara’s key is the missing piece, but he cannot simply take it from her.

Michael kisses Sara, asks her to wait for him, and tries to move their relationship forward while still pressing for the key indirectly. When that approach fails, he calls on Nika for help; Nika agrees to meet Sara, talks to her about her relationship with Michael, and then steals Sara’s key while distracting her.

A familiar inmate returns to Fox River: John Abruzzi comes back alive and unexpectedly more subdued, which immediately changes the prison’s atmosphere. He later makes peace with T-Bag, and the two reach a truce.

Tweener, meanwhile, is cornered by Avocado and takes brutal revenge by using a razor blade to cut and castrate him after refusing to keep playing the role others expect of him. This marks a major turning point in how the other prisoners see him.

On the outside, Veronica keeps digging into Quinn’s phone records and finds multiple calls from Montana, which pushes her investigation forward. At the same time, the Vice President confronts her brother, revealing tension between them and showing that he knows she has kept him alive for reasons of her own.

The mystery man who saved Lincoln identifies himself to him and explains that Lincoln has been trapped in a wider conspiracy involving powerful people and a company he used to work for. He tells Lincoln that Lincoln was used as part of a larger plan, not simply as a random target.

The escape plot keeps moving: Michael pulls together more of the plan, but the infirmary key remains the obstacle. He is also forced to deal with growing complications inside the prison, including Bellick’s attention and the risk that the escape route could be exposed.

By the end of the episode, the situation has shifted in several directions at once: Lincoln has survived the roadside attack, Michael has advanced the escape but still needs the key, Abruzzi is back in play, and Tweener and Sara both become crucial to the next stage of the plan.
