Rick and Morty Episode 17: The Ricks Must Be Crazy

Rick and Morty and Summer leave a movie on an alternate Earth, but Rick’s ship won’t start because the battery is dead. Rick and Morty go inside the battery to fix it, leaving Summer behind in the ship, which is told to keep her safe. The ship takes that order extremely literally and escalates from protecting her to violently eliminating anyone it thinks could be a threat.

Inside the battery, Morty discovers that it is actually a tiny universe created to generate power for Rick’s car. The beings there have developed their own civilization around a device that produces electricity, and Rick has secretly been siphoning off most of that power. Morty is horrified by this arrangement, and Rick dismisses his complaints as an inefficient moral objection.

Rick and Morty then meet the scientist responsible for the civilization’s current energy breakthrough, a man named Zeep Xanflorp, who has created an even smaller universe to generate power for his own world. Zeep’s invention has made Rick’s setup obsolete, and the three of them are forced into the next nested universe below. The episode turns into a chain of competing creators and invented worlds, with Rick trying to regain control of the power supply while Zeep proves to be just as ruthless and self-satisfied as Rick.

As Rick, Morty, and Zeep move deeper into the nested realities, the episode keeps widening the scale of the same basic problem: each society depends on exploiting the one beneath it. Morty repeatedly pushes back against the ethics of all of it, while Rick focuses on getting home and restoring power. The episode ends with the power struggle resolved enough for Rick to return, and Summer’s ordeal in the ship having run its own dangerous course in parallel.
