Rick and Morty Episode 39: The Vat of Acid Episode

Rick and Morty go to a shady deal where Rick has prepared a fake vat of acid as an emergency escape plan. When the situation turns awkward, they jump into the vat and hide there while armed gangsters hover outside, but the standoff drags on until Morty gets fed up and kills the gangsters himself.

Back at home, Morty angrily criticizes Rick for the bad “vat of acid” idea and demands something that lets him undo mistakes. Rick builds a small remote that appears to let Morty save and reload his actions. Morty immediately uses it to indulge in reckless, consequence-free behavior, repeatedly resetting after crimes and stunts.

Morty eventually meets a girl and starts a relationship with her. After a plane crash leaves them stranded in the mountains, he is tempted to use the remote, but instead chooses to call for help because his last save point was before they met. Once they are rescued, Jerry accidentally activates the remote, and Morty’s attempt to recover the relationship goes badly, causing him to overwrite the save point.

Morty then apologizes to Rick, but Rick reveals that the remote did not actually rewind time. Instead, it sent Morty into alternate realities and killed the versions of Morty already living there. Morty is horrified and begs Rick to fix it, so Rick merges the realities in a way that brings all the consequences of Morty’s actions together. The episode ends with an angry mob of people from those merged realities arriving at Rick and Morty’s house, and Rick offers only one escape: the same fake vat of acid from the beginning.
