Rick and Morty Episode 41: Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri

The episode opens with a domestic argument over an invisibility belt, then quickly shifts when a version of Beth from space returns to confront Rick. She has been involved in a conflict with the Galactic Federation and brings that danger back to Earth.

At the same time, Morty and Summer keep fighting over the invisibility belt, while Jerry is preoccupied with his own odd hobby of puppetry. Back on Earth, the returned Beth reconnects with the family, but tension builds as she and Rick clash over what happened to her.

Rick discovers that the version of Beth who returned from space has a bomb-like device in her neck. He reveals that the other Beth also has a similar device, and the two Beths are left with the unsettling reality that Rick has not told either of them which one is the original.

The Federation tracks the spacefaring Beth to Earth, and their arrival escalates the situation. A Federation operative mistakes the wrong Beth for the one they want, and Rick has to intervene to keep Beth and Jerry from being killed. The family is pulled into a larger rescue effort as the Federation’s attack intensifies.

Rick, the two Beths, Morty, Summer, and Jerry end up forced into the same crisis when the Federation takes both Beths prisoner and brings them aboard their ship. The family then mounts a rescue attempt that turns into a larger battle against the Federation’s forces and their heavily armed planet-destroying machine.

As the fight continues, the family manages to survive the Federation assault, but the Beth situation remains unresolved. Rick is left with the knowledge that he once made the choice to keep even himself from knowing which Beth was which, and the episode closes on that uncomfortable uncertainty.
