Rick and Morty Episode 71: Fear No Mort

Rick and Morty, bored and looking for something that can still scare them, visit a horror-themed attraction and meet a mysterious man who tells them about the scariest place in the universe: a “Fear Hole” hidden in the bathroom of a Denny’s. They go to the restaurant, find the hole, and watch an instructional video explaining that it manifests a person’s greatest fear.

Morty is the first to jump in, and Rick quickly follows him after he falls into a nightmare filled with grotesque creatures. The two seem to escape together and return home, but their reality immediately becomes suspicious when Rick’s dead wife appears in the living room as if she were alive again. From there, the episode turns into a series of unsettling possibilities, with Rick appearing happy and Morty becoming increasingly distressed as he worries something is wrong.

As the situation continues, Morty starts to suspect that the fear hole is trapping them in a psychological trap rather than simply showing them monsters. He realizes that his deepest fear is tied to being abandoned or not mattering to Rick, and he pushes through humiliating and painful experiences until he finally confronts that fear directly. Once Morty accepts that fear, he escapes the hole for real and returns to the outside world.

At the end, Rick is revealed to have never actually gone into the hole with Morty, and the episode reframes the earlier events as Morty’s experience inside the fear illusion. Rick remains outside, photographs Morty’s survival, and leaves with a quiet acknowledgment of his achievement.
