Full recap

Morty crashes an interdimensional **estate sale** for a dead version of Rick and discovers a bizarre custom in which alternate Mortys attend their own funerals to hear what people say about them. What starts as curiosity turns into a long, obsessive chain of “funeral hopping” as Morty uses a portal device to visit multiple realities and listen to grieving families praise or lament their lost sons.

The episode opens with the Smith household dealing with the death of Rick, which has attracted a flood of alternate Ricks and Mortys from across the multiverse. The visitors swarm through the house claiming items, while Morty wanders around trying to understand what is happening. He meets a Morty who wears sunglasses and learns that the glasses are not fashion but an unusual way of seeing; this Morty introduces him to the idea of traveling to different universes to attend versions of his own funeral.

Using a small portal device, Morty begins hopping from funeral to funeral. At first, he is motivated by the chance to hear kind things said about him, and he encounters many strange alternate realities and many different versions of “Morty.” One of the funerals takes him to a reality where the deceased boy is called “Mort,” and the family’s grief is especially sincere and intense. In that world, Morty sees a version of the Smith family that appears deeply affectionate and devastated by their loss.

Morty becomes drawn to this seemingly ideal reality and stays longer than he should. The grieving family welcomes him, believing he is their lost son, and he gradually gets pulled into their lives. He grows especially close to this universe’s Jerry, who treats him with unusual warmth and takes him on a father-son outing. But the arrangement becomes unstable when Jerry insists Morty destroy the portal device so he can never leave. During the struggle, the device breaks, trapping Morty in that reality.

Trying to get home, Morty searches for that world’s Rick and finds that he is a sober, accomplished professor at MIT who has built a stable life away from his old habits. Morty pushes him to help repair portal travel, and the two begin working together on a functioning portal gun. As they do, Rick is pulled back toward his destructive tendencies, eventually resuming drinking in the process of making the technology work.

By the end, Rick returns to Morty in a drunken state and takes him on a ride, telling him in effect that he is his dad and giving Morty the acceptance he has been chasing. The episode closes on this emotionally charged note after pushing Morty through a bleak comparison between the family he has and the family he thinks he wants.
