Spartacus Episode 20: Sacramentum

Season 2· aired 2012-03-09

Spartacus and his group of rebels attempt to free those who became slaves by falling in foreign wars while Lucretia manages to recruit one of her husband's former gladiators.

Full recap

Spartacus and Agron lead a raid on the port of Neapolis, posing as Romans to inspect a shipment of enslaved prisoners of war. They choose a ship carrying German captives, free them, and bring them into the rebel camp, effectively doubling their numbers in a single day.

The rescue is not smooth: Agron speaks to the prisoners in their own language, and the situation briefly looks dangerous when a guard who understands it overhears him. Even after the captives are freed, tensions rise inside the rebel group because Crixus suspects Agron is favoring his own people and may be creating a faction within the army. Spartacus and Agron argue over the choice, but they ultimately prevent the dispute from turning violent and the new arrivals are accepted into the camp for the moment.

At the same time, the Roman side reacts brutally to the growing rebellion. Glaber orders public crucifixions and harsh punishment for anyone suspected of sympathizing with Spartacus, using fear to keep slaves in line. He also continues to tighten his control over his own household and allies, while the episode shows the political and personal pressure around him increasing.

Elsewhere, Gannicus is forced into a difficult position by Roman authority. He is offered only a token version of freedom unless he agrees to serve Roman interests, leaving him caught between survival, pride, and whatever loyalty he may still feel toward those who want him on their side. The episode closes with several of these tensions still unresolved, as both the rebel camp and the Roman camp are left in unstable positions after the raid and the Roman retaliation.
