Batiatus is presented with a gladiatorial opportunity of a lifetime. Spartacus and Crixus must overcome their mutual hostility to fight as a team against a legendary and unbeaten opponent.

Full recap

The episode centers on Capua’s desperate attempt to end a brutal drought by staging a major gladiatorial event, and it culminates in Spartacus and Crixus fighting together against the legendary Theokoles. By the end, Spartacus kills Theokoles, the crowd believes the gods have answered with rain, and the fight transforms Spartacus’s standing in the ludus.

Batiatus sees the drought and the planned games as a chance to raise his house’s prestige and profit, so he pushes hard to have his fighters featured in the event. The match is built around a “primus” style contest, with Crixus positioned as the gladiator expected to face Theokoles, and Spartacus added to make the fight more dramatic and profitable.

Spartacus and Crixus are forced into training together under Doctore, who insists they must fight as one if they hope to survive. Their hostility makes the training difficult, but Doctore repeatedly drills teamwork into them, while others around the ludus watch the tension between the two men with interest.

At the same time, the episode shows smaller power plays inside Batiatus’s household and the larger Roman world around him. Lucretia becomes involved in a scheme involving Ilithyia, who gets access to the gladiators, and Lucretia receives help from a fertility priestess in hopes of conceiving a child.

Batiatus also continues investigating the men responsible for the attack on him in the pits, using his own people to track down who arranged it. Once he learns who was behind the scheme, he responds with brutal retaliation.

In the arena, Spartacus and Crixus begin poorly because they cannot fully set aside their resentment. They seem to gain the upper hand at first, but Theokoles proves far more dangerous than expected and rises again after being knocked down, throwing them back into chaos.

Crixus is badly wounded during the fight, but even injured he manages to contribute to the final sequence by using what he learned in training. He helps create the opening Spartacus needs, and Spartacus finishes Theokoles with a decisive killing blow.

The victory has an immediate public effect: the crowd treats the result as a sign that the gods have been appeased, and rain finally begins to fall. Spartacus’s win over Theokoles makes him a major figure in Capua, while Crixus’s role in the fight also reflects the importance of the teamwork Doctore demanded.
