Spartacus Episode 6: Delicate Things

Spartacus is promised a reunion with his wife after Batiatus confirms she has been found and is being brought to Capua, and he immediately begins planning his escape instead of celebrating the victory. Crixus remains badly wounded and bedridden after the arena fight, while the rest of the ludus basks in Spartacus’s new status as champion of Capua.

Batiatus publicly praises Spartacus and revels in the prestige the victory brings him, imagining greater power and influence from having a famous champion in his stable. He also tells Spartacus that the man’s wife, Sura, has been located and will soon arrive, apparently fulfilling the reward he has been promising.

Spartacus uses the attention around him to advance a secret escape plan. He realizes that he will need more than hope if he wants to flee with Sura, so he begins putting practical pieces in place, including making use of his new status and arranging for a visit that will help him acquire a hidden weapon.

At the same time, Barca’s own future becomes uncertain when Batiatus receives troubling news connected to a past killing and no longer trusts Barca’s account of events. Tension builds between them, and the situation turns violent when Barca is attacked after being confronted, showing that loyalty in the ludus is becoming increasingly fragile.

The episode ends with Spartacus believing his long-awaited reunion has arrived at last. He prepares himself for Sura’s arrival, but when the wagon finally reaches the ludus, the reunion is devastating: Sura is brought to him injured and dies almost immediately in his arms, leaving Spartacus shattered and the escape plan collapsing in the face of loss.
