Spartacus Episode 8: Mark of the Brotherhood

Batiatus buys a new batch of slaves at auction to train as gladiators, while Crixus remains wounded and struggles with the possibility that he may be sold off. Spartacus, now celebrated for his victories, is increasingly seen as the ludus’s leading fighter, which only deepens Crixus’s resentment.

At the same time, Batiatus and Lucretia try to strengthen their political standing by giving Ilithyia access to one of the new recruits as her own gladiator. She chooses a tall Gaul named Segovax, and during the selection she makes it clear she wants a fighter who can be used to impress and entertain her social circle.

Ilithyia later brings guests to the ludus, expecting to show off her new gladiator, but the women become more interested in Spartacus. A tense exchange follows when Spartacus speaks openly about the betrayal of the Thracians, and Ilithyia becomes furious at being challenged in front of her guests. Embarrassed and angry, she orders Segovax to kill Spartacus.

Segovax attempts to strangle Spartacus in the baths, but Crixus intervenes and saves him. The attack leaves both Spartacus and Crixus injured, but the moment also forces a shift between them: Crixus’s actions show that, despite their rivalry, he still recognizes Spartacus as a fellow fighter under the same bond of the ludus.

After the attack, Segovax is brutally punished for his failure, and the episode closes with the broader tensions in the ludus sharpened: Spartacus’s rise continues, Crixus’s position remains uncertain, and Ilithyia’s attempt to assert control has backfired badly.
