Ted Lasso Episode 10: The Hope That Kills You

Nate is unexpectedly promoted from kit man to assistant coach, and the team celebrates with him after he learns the new role is real. Before the final match, Ted and the coaches use a video of Jamie insulting Richmond to fire up the players, while Rebecca suggests they lean into chaos and use trick plays to confuse Manchester City.

The episode then builds toward a decisive match that will determine Richmond’s fate. In the locker room, Roy chooses Isaac to wear the captain’s armband, and the team prepares for the huge game against Manchester City.

During the match, Richmond hold their ground for much of the first half. In the second half, Ted puts Roy back on the field, and Manchester City scores from a penalty kick to go up 1–0. When Jamie breaks toward goal, Roy chases him down and makes a hard tackle, injuring his own knee badly in the process. Roy leaves to a thunderous ovation from the crowd.

Late in the match, Richmond use the “Lasso special,” a chaotic trick play that puts players in unfamiliar positions and creates enough confusion for Dani to score and tie the game. For a moment, Richmond think they have escaped relegation, but in the final seconds Jamie makes an unselfish extra pass to a teammate, who scores the winning goal for Manchester City. Richmond lose 2–1 and are relegated.

After the match, Ted passes the visitors’ locker room and sees Jamie being harshly berated by his father for making the pass instead of trying to score himself. Back in Richmond’s locker room, the team, coaches, and friends grieve together, and Ted tells them that sadness is easier to bear when they can share it with one another.

The next day, Ted meets with Rebecca and tries to resign, but she refuses to let him go. Instead, they agree to come back fighting, aiming first for promotion and then for the Premier League.
