Ted Lasso Episode 11: Goodbye Earl

AFC Richmond enters the episode stuck in a long run of draws, and during a tense match, Dani Rojas accidentally kills the team’s greyhound mascot, Earl, with a penalty kick that was about to give Richmond its first win of the season. The accident leaves Dani shaken and unable to play with his usual confidence, so Ted and the coaching staff decide they need outside help and bring in a sports psychologist, Dr. Sharon Fieldstone.

The episode opens with Richmond still chasing its first victory after a string of tied matches in the Championship. In the match against Nottingham Forest, Dani steps up for a late penalty kick, but Earl suddenly breaks free, runs onto the pitch, and is struck by the ball while chasing a bird. Earl dies, the match ends without a win, and Dani is devastated by what happened.

In the aftermath, Dani becomes overwhelmed with guilt and begins having nightmares. At training, he cannot score and seems completely thrown off, which convinces Ted and Beard that he has the “yips,” meaning a sudden loss of a player’s ability caused by mental pressure. Higgins suggests bringing in a psychologist, and Ted reluctantly agrees despite clearly being uneasy about the idea.

Meanwhile, Rebecca is dating a man named John and also briefly deals with her own romantic uncertainty. By the next morning, she has ended the relationship with him.

Higgins introduces the team to Dr. Sharon Fieldstone, who takes over the office previously used by Higgins. Sharon is direct, disciplined, and not impressed by Ted’s usual charm, which immediately creates tension between them. She meets with Dani, and after speaking with her, he regains his composure and returns to the field with his usual energy, eventually scoring again in training. When Ted asks Dani what changed, Dani explains that Sharon helped him understand that football is still football, even alongside life and death.

Sharon’s success leads other players to seek sessions with her as well, which surprises Ted and seems to unsettle him. That night, Roy is adjusting to retirement by coaching his young niece’s girls’ team and spending time with the yoga group. The yoga group holds a watch party for the reality show *Lust Conquers All*, and one of the contestants turns out to be Jamie, to Roy’s annoyance.
