Ted Lasso Episode 17: Headspace

Ted finally commits to therapy but struggles to open up at first, Roy and Keeley hit a painful snag over how much space they need in their relationship, and Nate’s sudden rise in attention starts curdling into cruelty toward the people around him.

Ted’s first visit with Sharon is abrupt and uncomfortable: he is skeptical of therapy, makes it clear he does not trust it, and leaves before the session can get anywhere. His second attempt is worse, as he again clashes with Sharon and storms out after insulting psychotherapy and implying that therapists only care because they are paid. Later, after reflecting on that outburst, he returns for a third session and apologizes, which allows the conversation to become more honest and productive.

At AFC Richmond, Nate is enjoying the praise that has followed his recent tactical success, but he is not handling it well. He is visibly pleased by the attention online, yet his father’s reaction leaves him feeling undervalued and insecure. That insecurity spills into the training ground, where Nate begins snapping at others, especially Colin and Will. Beard notices Nate’s behavior and confronts him about it, prompting Nate to apologize to Colin in front of the team. The squad then presents Nate with a custom “Wonder Kid” jersey as a gesture of appreciation, which briefly seems to restore his mood. But later, after scrolling through tweets, Nate finds a post calling him a loser, and that sends him back into anger; he turns on Will and throws the jersey down at him in a cruel outburst.

Roy and Keeley’s relationship runs into tension because Roy is spending nearly all of his free time with her. Keeley becomes uncomfortable with how constantly he is around, and after being advised by Rebecca and Higgins, she tries to make him understand that she needs more space. Roy is hurt and leaves angry, and Keeley breaks down in tears. Later, Roy realizes he has pushed too hard and tries to make up for it by giving her an evening to herself.

Meanwhile, Ted later runs into Trent Crimm at the pub, and Trent asks for a comment about Ted’s departure from the sport. Ted continues to insist that his earlier collapse was caused by food poisoning rather than anything else.
