Ted and Dr. Sharon realize they might have to meet each other halfway. Tensions are high as the team prepares for the semifinal.
Full recap
The episode follows AFC Richmond as it prepares for its FA Cup semifinal against Manchester City, while Ted is pulled away to help Dr. Sharon after she is hit by a car and suffers a concussion. It ends with Richmond suffering a heavy defeat, Ted finally revealing a painful part of his past to Sharon, and Rebecca and Sam meeting in person after their online connection.
Ted and Sharon begin the episode in therapy, where Sharon talks with her own therapist about Ted’s reluctance to open up. Shortly after that session, Sharon is riding her bike when a car clips her, sending her to the hospital with a concussion. Ted goes to check on her, and Roy, Beard, and Nate are left to handle the team in his absence. Roy also has to leave because he is called away to pick up his niece from school.
Back with the team, Richmond heads to Wembley for the FA Cup semifinal against Manchester City, making the club’s first appearance there. Before kickoff, Ted tells Beard, Nate, Roy, and Higgins that he did not leave the previous match because of food poisoning; he left because he had a panic attack. The coaches respond with support. Jamie also has to face his father, who shows up wearing Jamie’s old Manchester City jersey and spends the match heckling him from the stands.
The match is a disaster for Richmond, as Manchester City overwhelms them 5–0. Afterward, Jamie’s father continues insulting him in the locker room, which pushes Jamie to finally punch him. Beard steps in and throws the man out. The atmosphere is then worsened further by the crushing loss and by everyone processing the emotional fallout of the game.
Overwhelmed, Ted calls Sharon and opens up to her about his past, telling her that his father died by suicide when Ted was 16. He then returns to the club, while Beard decides to leave for the night. Meanwhile, Rebecca watches a postgame interview with Sam, in which he reflects on the loss and says that trying and risking hurt is better than not trying at all. Inspired by the interview, Rebecca goes to see him, only to find him waiting at her door; they kiss and go inside together.
