Ted Lasso Episode 24: (I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea

Ted Lasso season 3 episode 2 opens with Trent Crimm asking to shadow AFC Richmond and write a book about the club. Ted agrees to let him observe, even though Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins are uneasy about it.

News then breaks that the star footballer Zava has left Juventus and is considering moves in England. Rebecca immediately sees an opportunity to beat Rupert if he tries to sign Zava, and Richmond becomes interested in recruiting him. At the same time, Keeley is trying to manage her new PR firm and deal with the pressures of running it.

Richmond’s first Premier League match of the season is against Chelsea, the club where Roy Kent built his career. Before the game, Roy makes it clear that he does not want Trent around the team, because he still resents a harsh article Trent once wrote about him when he was a teenager at Chelsea.

During the match, Richmond struggle, and Rebecca learns that Zava is expected to join Chelsea. Rupert shows up and uses his charm to try to pull Zava toward West Ham instead, which makes Rebecca furious. Ted watches all of this unfold while Richmond continue to fight through the game.

Trent and Roy eventually have a tense but honest conversation, helped along by Ted, and the two begin to reconcile. In the second half, Richmond score in bizarre fashion when the ball rebounds off Dani Rojas’s face and into the goal, giving the team a 1-1 draw.

After the match, Zava shocks everyone at the press conference by announcing that he will sign with AFC Richmond instead of Chelsea or West Ham. Later, Roy admits that being back at Chelsea stirred up difficult memories about realizing his own playing ability was declining, and Ted and Trent listen as he reflects on that part of his career.
