Ted Lasso Episode 28: Sunflowers
A friendly match takes the team to Amsterdam, where one night out unlocks truths for many.

AFC Richmond travels to Amsterdam for a friendly match and loses badly, 5–0, leaving the team dispirited. Ted gives everyone the night off without curfew, and the episode follows several separate Amsterdam outings that each lead to a personal revelation or turning point.
After the loss, Rebecca is irritated by the Ajax fans singing “Three Little Birds,” while Ted tries to lift the mood by telling the team they can spend the night as they please. Roy insists on taking Jamie out for extra training instead of letting him go enjoy the city, but the two end up exploring Amsterdam together, with Jamie acting as a surprisingly knowledgeable guide. Their outing becomes awkwardly personal when Roy admits he has never seen a windmill and does not know how to ride a bike; Jamie buys them bikes, and Jamie eventually teaches Roy how to ride.
Elsewhere, Colin goes to a gay bar and notices Trent following him. Colin panics and leaves, but Trent tells him he has known Colin is gay for months and speaks to him about his own experience coming out to his family, easing some of Colin’s fear. Beard tries to help Ted break out of his funk by offering him drugs, but Ted waits until Beard has gone before taking them, sending himself into a solo, hallucinatory night that includes a stop at a Chicago-themed restaurant and a major idea about football.
Rebecca goes off on her own, falls into a canal, and is rescued by a Dutch man on a houseboat, where she spends time with him after losing her phone. The team’s other players wander through their own night out, including group scenes that build toward more playful, chaotic moments in the city. By morning, Ted presents Beard with his new tactical concept: a system in which players must be ready to take any position on the field. Beard identifies it as *Total Football*, which originated in Amsterdam, and agrees the team should adopt it.
The episode ends with the club heading back out, in good spirits, as they board the bus and sing “Three Little Birds” together.
