Ted Lasso Episode 3: Trent Crimm: The Independent

Rebecca learns that a tabloid newspaper has photos of Ted and Keeley that could be used to embarrass the club, so she arranges to stop the story from being published, but in exchange Ted must spend the day being profiled by a sharp, skeptical reporter named Trent Crimm.

At the club, Ted and the coaches deal with the fallout from the team’s earlier loss and a new tactical idea. Ted notices that the kit man Nate has suggested a smarter attacking plan, and Ted gives Nate credit by using his idea in training.

The episode also shows the tension around Nate being bullied by other players, especially Jamie and his friends. Roy notices it, asks Ted whether he plans to do anything, and when Ted chooses not to intervene directly, Roy takes matters into his own hands by confronting Jamie and ordering him to stop.

Trent shadows Ted through the day and quickly realizes Ted’s style is not what he expected. During training and conversation, Ted openly explains that the team’s strategy came from Nate and says he is more focused on supporting people than obsessing over wins and losses.

Ted then brings Trent and Roy to a community event at a school, where Roy ends up winning over the children by joining in and playing soccer with them.

Later, Ted takes Trent to an Indian restaurant owned by the family connected to Ted’s airport driver. Ted tries the food, finds it extremely spicy, and still keeps eating out of politeness, even finishing Trent’s meal as well.

By the end of the day, Trent has enough for his article and leaves with a clearer sense of Ted’s approach. Higgins later reads the finished piece to Rebecca, and instead of attacking Ted, the article presents him as a decent, principled leader while still doubting the team’s chances, which leaves Rebecca frustrated because her plan has backfired.
