Ted Lasso Episode 37: Richmond's Got Talent

Ted, Beard, and Alice are forced to scramble for new attacking options when the women’s team loses another striker to pregnancy leave, so they decide to hold open tryouts for anyone who might be able to play up front. At the same time, Keeley is trying to keep the women’s side afloat while dealing with financial and logistical problems, and Rebecca is pulled into damage control over the club’s reputation and sponsorship issues.

The tryouts become a chaotic filter of hopefuls, with most candidates eliminated quickly. Dani Rojas’s sister Maria shows up and initially seems promising to Beard, but she is eventually ruled out because she does not actually know how to play soccer. By the end of the day, only two women are still standing: Lizzie Davis and Shannon, neither of whom is a natural striker, though Ted is impressed by Shannon’s energy.

Alice and Ted then visit Gemma, a former teammate of Alice’s who had left football to study law. Gemma explains that she quit partly because Alice was so hard on her when they played together. Ted reveals that Gemma was the only person Alice had actually suggested for the team, which changes Gemma’s mind; she agrees to join Richmond while continuing law school.

Back at the club, the women’s team continues to face setbacks, including a sponsor pulling out and a uniform shortage. Roy helps by getting Phoebe and her friends to make improvised kits for the players. During a shareholders’ meeting, the club’s bleak financial outlook and the news around the women’s team are met with little enthusiasm from the people in attendance.

The episode builds to the team’s first match, where the new additions are still unsettled and the game is not going smoothly. Late in the match, Gemma is sent on, and she scores the winning goal, giving Richmond the result they desperately need.
