Full recap
The episode opens at the base of Wall Rose, where a desperate crowd waits by the gate to evacuate Trost amid the Titan invasion. A greedy merchant blocks the way with his wagon of goods, insisting they are worth more than civilian lives and using his connections to intimidate a Garrison soldier into backing down.
Tempers flare as civilians argue for priority, but chaos erupts when an abnormal Titan charges toward the group. Mikasa Ackerman swiftly intervenes, using her omni-directional mobility gear to slice through the Titan's neck in a single, precise strike, saving everyone and earning stunned praise from a nearby soldier.
This feat triggers a flashback to Mikasa's childhood. Her parents live peacefully in a cabin until three armed robbers burst in, murder her father in front of her and her mother, then kill her mother as well. The bandits, recognizing Mikasa and her mother's rare oriental heritage, decide to sell Mikasa as a slave in the capital's underground market.
The robbers tie up the traumatized young Mikasa and leave her alone. Eren Jaeger, a boy from nearby, bursts into the cabin armed with a knife tied to a broom handle. He attacks the first robber who pursues him, gutting the man and stabbing him repeatedly while calling him an animal for enslaving children. Eren then frees Mikasa, declaring himself her friend and urging her to fight back to survive.
Mikasa reveals a third robber is present. As he lunges to choke Eren, Mikasa snaps into action, planting her feet firmly—cracking the floorboards—and snaps the man's neck with her bare hands, killing him instantly.
Eren wraps Mikasa in her mother's scarf for warmth, tells her they are the same now, and leads her away from the cabin as snow falls.
Back in the present, during the Trost evacuation, Mikasa reflects on these events while amid the chaos. A Garrison soldier questions her skill with the blades, but she remains stoic and focused. The episode closes on this poignant note amid the ongoing battle sounds.
