Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Episode 44: No Matter How Many Lives

The episode opens in the ruined Entertainment District as the battle’s final shockwave leaves Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke, Tengen, and Nezuko scattered among the debris. Nezuko bursts out of her box and uses her flames to destroy the blood blades erupting from Gyutaro’s body, preventing further devastation and stopping the poison from spreading through the others.

Tanjiro, still barely conscious, reunites with Nezuko and Zenitsu and then searches for the others. He finds Inosuke and Tengen in critical condition from Gyutaro’s poison, and Nezuko’s flames burn the poison out of them, saving their lives. With the immediate danger over, Tanjiro moves through the wreckage and finds the severed heads of the demon siblings, who are still alive long enough to continue arguing with each other.

As Daki and Gyutaro bicker, Tanjiro tries to stop them from attacking and cursing each other in their final moments. Daki cruelly blames and rejects Gyutaro, while Gyutaro begins remembering his human past. The episode then shifts into his backstory, showing the harsh conditions of his childhood in the red-light district, where he grew up poor, ugly by local standards, and abused. The episode shows how deeply he cared for his sister, Ume, and how her beauty and later suffering shaped his life.

In the flashback, Gyutaro’s life spirals through violence and desperation, leading to the moment when he and Ume are taken in by a powerful demon and turned into demons together. The story returns to the present as the siblings continue to fade, and their hostility gives way to a final emotional reconciliation. In an afterlife-like scene, Ume refuses to leave Gyutaro behind, and the two walk off together.

After the battle, Obanai Iguro arrives at the scene and speaks with Tengen. Tengen announces that he is retiring as a Hashira, and the news is relayed back to the Demon Slayer Corps headquarters, where Kagaya is overjoyed at the victory. The episode ends by showing that the defeat of an Upper Rank demon has serious consequences elsewhere as Akaza is summoned to the Infinity Castle and realizes that one of the Upper Ranks has fallen.
