Dexter Episode 25: Our Father

Dexter spends this episode trying to kill a drug dealer he believes is responsible for the deaths of two college women, but the plan goes wrong when he ends up killing the wrong man. The victim turns out to be Oscar Prado, and Dexter is left shaken by having killed someone who did not deserve it.

The episode opens with Dexter several months after the events of season 2, with his life seeming calmer: his relationship with Rita is going well, and he is still carrying out killings according to his father’s code. He sets his sights on Freebo, a drug dealer he believes murdered two female students, and goes to Freebo’s house under the pretense of buying heroin. There he notices Freebo’s girlfriend, Teegan Campbell.

Later that night, Dexter returns and finds Freebo fighting with another man. When that man turns on Dexter, Dexter stabs him in self-defense. The next day, Dexter learns that the man he killed was Oscar Prado, the brother of Assistant District Attorney Miguel Prado. Dexter is disturbed because Oscar was not his intended target and, from his perspective, was innocent.

Miguel seeks Dexter out for answers and comfort, and invites him to Oscar’s wake. Dexter attends the wake, which means leaving Debra alone on their deceased father’s birthday, and he begins to question Harry’s code and his loyalty to it. At the same time, Debra learns from Anton Briggs, one of Quinn’s informants, that Oscar had a drug problem and owed money to Freebo. She blurts this out loudly in Miguel’s presence, which causes Lt. María LaGuerta to remove her from the case.

Debra is then assigned to a Jane Doe case, and Dexter recognizes the body as Teegan’s. Meanwhile, Rita is craving chocolate pudding, remembers having the same craving before, and realizes she is pregnant.
