Dexter Episode 34: Go Your Own Way
A series of chess-like moves ensues when Dexter and Miguel vie for the upper hand, with Miguel winning Rita's affection by presenting her with a lavish wedding gift; Debra wonders if her relationship with Anton is worth the trouble.
Full recap
Dexter and Miguel spend the episode circling each other in a quiet power struggle, with Dexter trying to find a way to cut ties before Miguel can control him further. At the same time, Debra’s relationship with Anton becomes a liability in her work, and she has to decide whether keeping him close is worth risking the case.
Dexter and Rita continue socializing with Miguel and Sylvia, but Dexter is fully aware that Miguel is manipulating everyone around him. Hoping to slow Miguel down, Dexter suggests to Rita that Miguel may be having an affair with LaGuerta, using the idea as leverage rather than because he has proof. Dexter then goes to Miguel’s office and bluntly tells him that their relationship will end after the wedding, making it clear that he no longer wants to be associated with him.
Meanwhile, Debra lets Anton stay with her, but she soon worries that his presence could damage the case because he is a key witness. She is forced to push him out, even though the relationship is important to her. In the investigation, a bartender named Toby Edwards becomes the prime suspect in Ellen Wolf’s murder, and the missing wedding ring from Ellen’s body becomes an important clue.
The case takes another turn when Barbara is attacked by a stranger. Angel asks Dexter to run a blood test on Barbara’s keys so they can identify the attacker, and Dexter gets the result needed to arrest the man who did it. After Edwards is cleared because of his alibi, LaGuerta reprimands Dexter for having run the blood test without a proper case tag.
Dexter then realizes that Miguel is using LaGuerta to tighten his grip on the investigation. He interrupts one of Miguel’s interactions with her, trying to stop the manipulation from advancing further. Later, Miguel brings Dexter to the rooftop at the department and confronts him about the ring and the shirt, clearly trying to pressure him into submission. Dexter does not back down and simply walks away.
After that confrontation, Miguel contacts George King and tells him that Dexter now knows Freebo’s location. That night, Dexter decides that he has to kill Miguel. Before he can act, though, someone outside his apartment grabs him, stuffs him into a trunk, and drives off with him.
