Full recap
Dexter spends most of the episode trying to keep Miami Metro from identifying Arthur Mitchell as the Trinity Killer while Arthur starts closing in on Dexter’s secret identity. Rita also reaches out to Dexter about something personal, but the conversation leaves her disappointed.
At the start, Debra’s investigation has pushed the department close to figuring out who Trinity is, so Dexter becomes alarmed and decides he has to buy time before Arthur can be arrested. He works to interfere with the case so he can deal with Trinity himself, while trying to avoid exposing the fact that he has been using the alias “Kyle Butler” in his private pursuit of Arthur.
Meanwhile, Arthur becomes confused and suspicious about why Dexter did not simply turn him in, and he begins his own violent effort to learn who “Kyle Butler” really is. The episode’s tension comes from both men hunting each other in different ways: Dexter trying to slow the investigation and Arthur trying to uncover Dexter’s identity.
Rita confides in Dexter, but the exchange does not go well and she ends up disappointed by his response. The episode also shows Miami Metro’s internal problems continuing to narrow the characters’ options, adding pressure to the investigation and to Dexter’s efforts to keep control.
