Game of Thrones Episode 68: Winterfell

Season 8· aired 2019-04-14

Arriving at Winterfell, Jon and Daenerys struggle to unite a divided North. Jon gets some big news.

Full recap

Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen arrive at **Winterfell** with the Unsullied and Dothraki, and the Northerners watch them with open suspicion. Arya Stark secretly watches the procession, smiling at Jon and Gendry, but her expression changes when she sees Sandor Clegane; when Drogon and Rhaegal fly overhead, the people of Winterfell recoil in fear.

Inside the castle, Jon hugs Bran Stark, then kisses Sansa Stark and introduces Daenerys to her, but Sansa greets Daenerys with cool politeness rather than warmth. Bran quickly interrupts the reunion to warn that there is no time for celebration: the White Walkers now have Viserion, the dead have crossed the Wall, and they are marching south.

The northern lords gather in the great hall, where Jon orders young Lord Ned Umber to return home and bring his people back to Winterfell for safety. He also asks that the same offer be made to the Night’s Watch, since holding the Wall is no longer possible.

In the Iron Islands storyline, Theon Greyjoy fights his way aboard Euron Greyjoy’s ship at night and frees Yara Greyjoy from captivity. Yara decides to return to the Iron Islands to reclaim them, while Theon chooses to head to Winterfell and join the fight there.

In King’s Landing, Qyburn hires Bronn to assassinate Jaime and Tyrion Lannister if either survives the coming war. Qyburn also informs Cersei that the White Walkers have breached the Wall, while Euron returns with Yara as his prisoner, and Euron and Cersei begin a sexual relationship.

Samwell Tarly is at Winterfell when Jon tells him the truth about Jon’s parentage, learning that Jon is not who he believed himself to be. Sam also learns that his father and brother were killed, and he is left to absorb the news while the larger gathering prepares for the coming battle.

Jaime Lannister arrives at Winterfell and is confronted by Bran Stark, whom he once shoved from a tower years earlier; the reunion is tense and unsettling. The episode closes with the major players converging at Winterfell as the threat from the dead draws ever closer.
