My Hero Academia Episode 59: What`s the Big Idea?

Season 3· canon

The exam nears its end, but Izuku and the other hero candidates must fend off Gang Orca to finish the rescue mission.

Full recap

Three weeks before the licensing exam, a planning meeting of the Hero Public Safety Commission discusses the need for the exam to focus on cooperation, as the charisma gap left by All Might's absence cannot be filled by a single person. Back at the exam, a hero known as Gang Orca and a group of individuals acting as villains begin their attack on the arena. A proctor named Yokumiru Mera explains that students are graded based on the mistakes they make during this second phase of the exam.

A student named Yo Shindo tells Izuku to evacuate the first aid station while he holds back the villains. Yo uses his Quirk to create tremors, breaking up the ground and keeping the first wave of villains at bay. Gang Orca then surprise attacks Yo, using his Quirk to paralyze him with an ultrasonic wave. Before Gang Orca can attack Izuku and the other students trying to evacuate the first aid area, a student named Shoto stops him with an ice wave. Other students, including Mashirao, Mina, and Fumikage, arrive to help with the evacuation.

Gang Orca uses his sonic waves to destroy Shoto's ice attack, though his men remain frozen. A student named Inasa arrives and uses his wind Quirk to blow the villains away. Shoto and Inasa immediately show irritation at the sight of each other. Proctors watching the exam are impressed that the students prioritized the first aid station and agree that Shoto and Inasa are best suited to fighting the villains.

Shoto tells Inasa to help evacuate, but Inasa refuses. Shoto tries to attack with a stream of fire, but Inasa uses his wind at the same time, causing both attacks to miss. Shoto tries to explain that Gang Orca blocked his ice, but Inasa claims Shoto is trying to hog the glory because he is the son of a hero named Endeavor. Shoto argues back and lowers his guard, getting hit by one of Gang Orca's sidekicks, who uses a cement-like ability.

Gang Orca states it is outrageous that the students are arguing in this situation, and his men attack with their cement-like abilities. Shoto blocks the incoming attacks with ice while Inasa dodges them, but they continue to argue. Inasa explains that heroes are supposed to be passionate, but Shoto and his father have too much hate in their hearts and appear cold rather than spirited. Inasa recalls being dismissed by Endeavor when he sought an autograph, and then Shoto did something similar at the U.A. Entrance Exam for recommended students.

Shoto tries to ignore Inasa and focus on the test, but he realizes he still harbors some residual hate for his father despite having reconciled with his mother. Yokumiru, Gang Orca, and some proctors express disappointment with the two students' decision-making. Inasa and Shoto again use their Quirks simultaneously and miss, this time putting Yo in danger. Izuku arrives in time to save Yo and sternly questions Shoto's lack of focus.

Inasa recalls never disliking anything during his childhood, but Endeavor was the first person he ever disliked. During the U.A. Entrance Exam for recommended students, Inasa narrowly beat Shoto in the practical exam race. Inasa wanted to befriend Shoto, but Shoto rejected him, similar to how his father had. Inasa describes the look in both their eyes as if they are hating something ahead of them. Shoto realizes that Inasa was at the entrance exams and that his failure to remember Inasa immediately was because he hadn't bothered to look at him. This makes Shoto surmise that he cannot simply bury and forget his past, as it is now resurfacing.

Gang Orca gets close to Shoto and then surprise attacks Inasa while Inasa is dodging the cement-like attacks. Gang Orca then grabs Shoto and paralyzes him with the same hypersonic wave attack. The attack does not have as strong an effect on Inasa because it was used at long range, but it immobilizes him. The sidekicks rush to attack the evacuation effort. Inasa realizes that his hate has made him become the type of hero he dislikes. Shoto acknowledges that his past mistakes have led to this situation. Both decide they need to make up for their mistakes.

Yo recovers and uses tremors to keep the villains back. He explains that his brain is accustomed to being shaken due to his Quirk, so Gang Orca's earlier attack did not have its full effect. Yo had planned to use this to surprise the hero, but the first-year students got in the way. He tells Izuku to split up and help rescue the remaining evacuees. Gang Orca drops Shoto and moves to finish off Inasa. Shoto realizes he cannot become a top hero by competing in vain without teamwork. He stakes the battle on whether Inasa feels the same way and unleashes his flames at full power. Inasa combines his wind with the fire, and they manage to trap Gang Orca inside a spiral of fire.

Gang Orca states that their combination attack will not make up for their foolishness but admits it is a good attack. He acknowledges they are both trying to make up for their mistakes and commends them. His sidekicks, knowing Gang Orca is weak to extreme heat, attack Shoto while he is on the ground. Shoto uses his ice to defend himself, as his body cannot move. Izuku and Mashirao stop the sidekicks from helping Gang Orca. Mashirao confirms all the injured have been evacuated and reinforcements will arrive soon. Yokumiru states the students have just three H.U.C. (presumably "Humanity Under Crisis") people left to rescue before the exam ends.

Nagamasa, Fumikage, Mina, and Tsuyu arrive to help suppress the villains. Gang Orca commends Shoto and Inasa on their hot wind prison, claiming a normal villain would submit. However, Gang Orca tells them they need to plan ahead after revealing their hand. He uses water to cool himself off and then blasts apart the flaming twister using sonic waves. He asks what they have next and prepares to finish them off. Izuku tries to save them, delivering a powerful kick that nearly breaks Gang Orca's defense. The test suddenly ends after Denki and Eijiro rescue the last of the H.U.C. employees.

Yokumiru announces that everyone should have their injuries treated and change before the results are revealed. Gang Orca's sidekicks apologize, saying the protectors made it difficult to move. Even without the restraints, Gang Orca believes he might have been defeated if the fight had continued longer. Everyone changes and gathers around a board where the results will be announced. Yokumiru explains the students were graded on their efficiency and how few mistakes they made. The names of those who passed are displayed on the board, and Izuku looks for his name.
