Prison Break Episode 53: Boxed In

Michael is taken to General Zavala’s office and questioned about the escape attempt, with Zavala already suspecting he knows more than he is saying. Michael denies involvement, but Zavala does not believe him and punishes him by locking him in a sun-baked isolation chamber, the prison’s “hot box,” out in the open yard.

While Michael is being punished, the pressure around the escape plot continues to build inside Sona. Mahone returns to the prison, and T-Bag tries to pull him toward his own scheme by suggesting they work together against Sammy in exchange for drugs. Bellick is also forced into a violent confrontation with another inmate and manages to survive by using acetone against him.

Michael eventually decides the only way to get out of the hot box is to tell Zavala the truth about the escape plot. He reveals that the situation is tied to Whistler, who is then brought in and interrogated under threat of torture. Under pressure, Whistler admits his connection to Michael and gives up Gretchen Morgan’s name.

Zavala then focuses on Gretchen and the kidnapping of L.J. He interrogates her about the boy’s location, but Gretchen turns the situation around, leads him off on a false trail, and kills him. After Zavala’s death, Michael and Whistler are sent back into the general prison population.

Elsewhere, Lincoln gets a brief, guarded conversation with L.J. while Gretchen has him blindfolded. By the end of the episode, the escape effort inside Sona is still unresolved, with the prison power struggle shifting after Zavala’s death and the various inmates left maneuvering for position.
