Reacher Episode 22: Smoke on the Water

Reacher and Duffy’s plan to get close to Zachary Beck reaches a critical point when they finally come face-to-face with the man Beck calls **McCabe**, who does not appear to recognize Reacher. The episode then shifts into open conflict as Reacher’s cover starts to unravel, the search for Teresa intensifies, and Quinn’s operation begins turning its attention toward anyone who may be leaking information.

At the opening meeting at Bizarre Bazaar’s warehouse, Quinn confronts Beck for unknowingly bringing an ATF agent into his home and threatens to kill him, but he is forced to spare Beck because buyers still expect to do business with him. In the same exchange, Quinn’s position is shown to be more precarious than it first seems: he needs the upcoming sale to keep his operation afloat and to pay back the Russian mob that helped finance his move to the East Coast.

While Reacher continues working under Beck, he also tries to keep moving the investigation toward Teresa’s location. He and Duffy arrange a meeting in town, but that creates problems when Richard Beck sees Duffy talking with Reacher and realizes something is off. Reacher is forced to reveal enough to Richard to keep him quiet and hopes the boy will not expose him.

Quinn’s paranoia then drives the episode’s escalating violence. After he learns that someone is probing his business, he orders his men to track down the source of the leaks, which leads to attacks on people connected to Reacher’s search. Neagley is targeted at her office building, while other men sent after Reacher are ambushed and killed in the woods. The episode also shows Quinn’s cruelty toward Richard when he forces the boy into a horrifying game of Russian roulette at gunpoint.

The final stretch follows Reacher and Duffy pursuing a lead on Teresa to a boat offshore. They find another dead end: Teresa is not there, and one of Quinn’s men is killed during the confrontation. By the end of the episode, Reacher is left with his cover badly damaged, the operation under heavier scrutiny, and no clear sign that Teresa has been recovered.
