Rick and Morty Episode 22: The Rickshank Rickdemption

Season 3· aired 2017-04-01

The Smith family tries to cope without Rick, which is painful enough on its own without taking into consideration the stifling rules put into place by the Federation. Meanwhile Rick's past is finally revealed as he attempts to get out of his prison

Full recap

The episode opens with Rick being interrogated by a Galactic Federation agent inside a simulated memory meant to extract the secret of his portal technology. Rick sees through the setup, manipulates the simulation, and ultimately turns the interrogation against the Federation.

On Earth, now controlled by the Federation, Morty and Summer argue over Rick’s absence. Summer refuses to accept that Rick is gone and digs up the buried portal gun from the backyard, intending to rescue him. Morty tries to stop her by taking her to the ruined version of their original dimension, where humans have been turned into monstrous creatures by one of Rick’s past mistakes. The two are captured by the family living there, but they are rescued by the Citadel of Ricks, who take them away.

Inside the Federation prison, Rick continues playing along with the interrogation while quietly advancing his real plan. He reveals a fake backstory about his life, using it to bait the Federation and to set up a series of hidden moves that let him seize control of the situation. He transfers consciousness between bodies, escapes the prison, and brings the Citadel of Ricks into conflict with the Federation. The result is a massive collapse of the Federation’s power structure.

Back on Earth, the Federation’s rule falls apart almost instantly. With the Federation gone, the family’s old life is restored in some ways, but the episode does not return things to normal emotionally. Rick comes back to the Smith family, and the homecoming quickly turns bitter when Jerry refuses to welcome him back. Beth sides against Jerry, and the argument ends with Beth choosing to divorce him.

The episode closes by revealing that Rick’s surrender and imprisonment were part of a deliberate plan, and he tells Morty that he orchestrated everything for his own purposes.
