Rick and Morty Episode 33: The Old Man and the Seat

At breakfast, Rick’s new alien intern, Glootie, keeps asking someone to help develop his app, even though Rick has a “Do Not Develop My App” warning tattooed on Glootie’s forehead. Rick then leaves for a private outing to his secluded bathroom in another dimension, where he discovers that someone else has been using his toilet.

Rick becomes obsessed with finding the intruder and traces the evidence through a chain of clues until he reaches an alien office worker named Tony. After confronting him, Rick learns that Tony is just an unhappy, lonely man with a bleak home life. Rick briefly traps Tony in a false, idealized reality, then lets him go when Tony realizes it is fake.

Meanwhile, Jerry ignores Rick’s warning and teams up with Glootie to develop the app. The app launches as a dating service called Lovefinderrz and quickly spreads, consuming everyone’s attention and causing chaos across the family’s lives. Summer becomes fixated on constantly changing romantic matches, which drives a wedge between her and Beth.

As the app’s effects worsen, Jerry and Morty demand that Glootie shut it down. Glootie takes them to his people’s ship, where they meet the alien leader, who refuses to help and explains that the app is meant to distract humanity while the aliens steal Earth’s water. Jerry and Morty are captured, but Glootie later helps destabilize the app by flooding it with useless ads, which breaks its hold on people.

Beth and Summer’s conflict turns physical, and Beth wins the fight. Back on Earth, Rick visits Tony at work with laxatives and chili, only to learn that Tony has quit his job and died in a skiing accident while trying to live more fully. Rick returns to his toilet and sits down, only for a crowd of holographic versions of Rick to appear and mock him for his loneliness.

In the post-credits scene, Jerry takes some of the same reality-altering substance and imagines himself as a respected water-bottle delivery driver.
