Rick and Morty Episode 65: That's Amorte

The Smith family’s regular spaghetti dinner turns horrifying when Morty learns Rick’s delicious pasta comes from the bodies of people who die by suicide on a human-like alien planet. Morty’s attempt to expose the truth triggers a chain reaction that turns the planet’s people, politics, and economy into a dark industry built around producing more and more spaghetti.

Rick starts by serving the family a new spaghetti dinner that everyone loves, especially because Jerry is unusually happy for once. Morty grows suspicious, investigates the source of the food, and follows Rick to a planet where the inhabitants look human and their bodies transform into spaghetti after suicide, but not after other kinds of death. Rick demonstrates this to Morty by showing how the process works and explaining the biological reason the transformation happens.

Morty is horrified and attends the funeral of the person the family ate, where he reveals what the spaghetti really was. That disclosure causes the planet’s leaders to realize the spaghetti has huge galactic value, and they quickly reshape society around maximizing suicide so they can sell the product. The planet becomes a bleak dystopia in which suicide is encouraged and commercialized, while demand from the wider galaxy grows far faster than supply.

Rick tries to solve the shortage by manufacturing his own supply. He first uses cloned bodies, but the clones kill each other before they can become spaghetti. He then tries creating artificial torsos, but that effort is attacked and destroyed by both disgusted outsiders and protesters who object to treating bodies as food, collapsing the operation in violence and suicide bombing.

To finally stop the obsession, Rick stages a live broadcast centered on a terminally ill man named Fred, showing his whole life so viewers can see the human reality behind the product. The emotional weight of Fred’s life and relationships overwhelms everyone watching, and people across the galaxy become sickened by what they have been consuming. The spaghetti market collapses, and Rick later serves the family a different meal while warning that its source is also unpleasant, but this time they choose not to ask questions and simply enjoy being ignorant.

A post-credits scene shifts to a planet of sentient vacuum cleaners, where a similar revelation about the origin of vacuum bags causes them to react with disgust in the same way.
