Rick and Morty Episode 89: Rickuiem Mort a Dream

Rick discovers Morty’s accidental mistake has ruined his work, and he lashes out at him. Instead of fixing the emotional fallout directly, Rick decides to alter Morty’s perception with an empathy-enhancing parasite so Morty will stop reacting so negatively to other people and to Rick himself.

With the parasite influencing him, Morty starts seeing the people around him in a much warmer, more understanding way. That change carries him through a series of increasingly strange experiences, including a cooperative adventure with Rick that becomes unexpectedly successful and pleasant. The improvement is not just in Morty’s attitude; the episode shows how radically his behavior changes when he’s forced to feel everyone else’s emotions more intensely.

Meanwhile, Summer and Jerry are sent on a separate errand to retrieve equipment for Rick. Their trip goes badly when they get stranded and end up dealing with a dangerous spacefaring killer. The two are forced to improvise to survive, with Summer taking the lead more than Jerry.

As the main plot escalates, Morty’s empathy becomes overwhelming and begins to affect his sense of self. Rick has to intervene to remove the parasite before it permanently damages Morty’s mind.
