Ted Lasso Episode 20: No Weddings and a Funeral
Rebecca is stunned by a sudden loss. The team rallies to show their support, but Ted finds himself grappling with a piece of his past.
Full recap
Rebecca and Sam wake up together after secretly spending the night together, and their flirtation makes clear they have become involved romantically. Their moment is interrupted when Rebecca’s mother arrives with devastating news: Rebecca’s father has died, and the family is preparing a funeral.
The news spreads to the club, and everyone rallies around Rebecca and decides to attend the funeral to support her. At the same time, Ted begins preparing to go with them, but he is hit by a severe panic attack while getting ready. He calls Sharon, who comes over and talks him through the attack in a therapy session that leads Ted to open up about the night his father died by suicide and the guilt and anger he still carries about it.
Back with Rebecca, the funeral stirs up painful memories and resentment about her father’s treatment of her mother and the damage he caused at home. Her mother wants her to give a eulogy, but Rebecca resists and struggles to find the right way to mourn someone she cannot forgive.
The funeral itself is tense and emotionally loaded. Rupert appears uninvited with his wife and their baby, which angers Rebecca, and Keeley and Sassy spend time with her, trying to comfort her and quietly noticing that she seems to be seeing someone. Rebecca eventually delivers a defiant, unexpected tribute that takes the form of singing “Never Gonna Give You Up,” turning the moment into a bizarre but pointed act of closure.
After the service, Rupert offers Rebecca his wife’s shares in Richmond, and she accepts them. At the post-funeral gathering, Jamie tells Keeley that he came back to Richmond partly because of her and admits he loves her, leaving her stunned, and Roy also tells her that he loves her. Rebecca then tells Sam that they need to end their relationship, saying she needs time, and the episode closes with her joining her mother to look through childhood photos and home videos.
