Ted Lasso Episode 22: Inverting the Pyramid of Success

Season 2· aired 2021-10-08

Richmond gets their final chance to win promotion as Ted deals with the fallout of Trent Crimm's painfully honest exposé.

Full recap

Ted receives overwhelming support from the club after the news about his panic attack breaks, but he keeps the focus on Richmond’s final match of the season. The team heads into the game knowing that a positive result could send them back to the Premier League.

Before kickoff, the fallout from the exposé still hangs over everything, but Ted refuses to dwell on it and instead keeps pushing the players toward the match. During the game, Richmond struggle at first with Nate’s “false nine” setup and go into halftime trailing 2–0. Nate wants to abandon the tactic, but Ted and the players decide to stick with it.

At halftime, Ted and the staff bring the discussion to the locker room, where the players are told that the strategy can work if they commit to it. The team returns to the pitch energized and keeps fighting. Jamie wins a penalty but gives the ball to Dani, who takes and scores it to bring Richmond level.

The equalizer is enough to secure promotion back to the Premier League, and the team and supporters celebrate. In the aftermath, Nate leaves the field upset and tears down Ted’s “Believe” sign.

Outside the immediate match, Sam decides to stay with Richmond instead of leaving, and he makes clear that his choice is about the club, not Rebecca. Roy is also still present as part of the team’s emotional support system, helping keep everyone grounded through the tension around the season’s end.
